Gene Wilder vs Johnny Depp – who’s the best Wonka?

Wilder is weird but Depp is downright sociopathic in his interpretation of the confectionary King. What we get with Depp’s Wonka is some kind of insight into why he has turned out to be such an eccentric recluse. With Gene Wilder, we’re just not sure. Depp makes a much better Wonka – he’s dark but he’s also vulnerable. Wilder – well, it’s more of a case of call social services..

The kids

This is a hard one to call because the original featured some spectacularly obnoxious brats who seem to be much more memorable than their 21st century counterparts. However, with Charlie Bucket, it is safe to say that young Freddie Highmore wins hands down.

Oompa Loompas

It was a little sad to see all those lovely Oompa Loompas replaced by just the one actor but the CGI spectacular dance routines make up for all of that. And, for those who were aching for the chance to sing along with the classic songs from the original, there’ll no doubt be a feeling of disappointment, but they can at least quote along with the best lines.

Nostalgic for the original? Well tune in during the week running up to Christmas and you can see if you agree with us. The newer version is definitely more in keeping with the original book and is all the better for having Tim Burton’s attention.
