The wedding between Southern belle Phoebe Ann Naylor and Spanish nobleman Don Andrea Baldasar is abruptly called off when one of the bride's rejected suitors, a cavalry officer, accidentally kills himself by falling through a window. The cavalry accuses Don Andrea of murder, and he flees to Texas with Sam Hollis, a brawling gunrunner, and Kronk, his Indian sidekick. En route to Texas, Don Andrea rescues an Indian girl, Lonetta, from being put to death by a Comanche medicine man. Don Andrea is reunited with his Phoebe Ann, only to discover that Sam is also attracted to her. The enraged Spaniard calls for a duel to the death, but the shootout is delayed by the arrival of the cavalry and a subsequent Indian attack. Another duel is cut short by both a hair-pulling contest between Phoebe Ann and Lonetta and the sudden spouting of an oil geyser from an open grave. During all the confusion and fighting, Don Andrea decides that it is Lonetta he truly loves, and he leaves Sam and Phoebe Ann to work out their romance. As the Texans bitterly complain about the sticky oil that has ruined their fine clothes, Sam suggests they give Texas back to the Indians.
