Following the birth of their first child, which is shown through close-up photography, a young couple, Michael and Helga, enroll in child care classes. They learn that an Oedipus complex can be avoided if both parents love the baby equally; that it is natural for infants to explore their sexual organs; and that masturbation is a normal reaction to puberty. Since Michael and Helga are also concerned with their own sexual happiness and hygiene, they listen to a physician lecture on the necessity for birth control, the different sexual responses of men and women, marital counseling, and the human anatomy. The doctor also speaks on the legalization of abortion and demonstrates the use of contraceptives. The research findings of Kinsey and Masters and Johnson serve as the basis for a discussion of the need for sexual foreplay, the most effective techniques in intercourse, and the stages leading to orgasm and postlude. At last Michael and Helga experience the fulfillment of their own sexual relationship, freed of neurotic impediments to enjoyment.
