Ranch owner Billy Porter leaves the wilderness to seek his fortune in San Francisco with his engine invention. Once in the city, Billy is fleeced of his money, and then befriends a sympathetic little lame boy, Jim McClusky, and his father, prizefighter Knockout McClusky, who is in jail for a crime for which he is innocent. Billy cares for the four waifs of the family until their father is released. Billy also meets Pearl Matthews when he stops her runaway horses in a park. Just prior to the start of a big fight in which Billy has backed McClusky against Tiger Doran, Billy discovers that McClusky has been drugged. With the aid of John B. Prescott, Billy enters the ring and knocks out Doran. Prescott turns out to be Billy's own father who is president of a big motor corporation and whose letter was responsible for Billy originally going to San Francisco. Billy perfects his motor and enters his car in a race. Despite an attempt to wreck his car, Billy wins the race, as well as Pearl's love.
