June Merrill, the daughter of a dude rancher, returns home from college and prepares to marry sweetheart Steve Madison her father's foreman. At the same time, "Slim" Griffith and Jimmy "The Gab" Boggs, Chicago gangsters recently released from prison, arrive at the ranch and inform Merrill, who years before was involved in their criminal activities, that other gang members are going to make a jailbreak and are going to come by the ranch. Although Merrill, who used to go by the name The Deacon, is now reformed, the gangsters know that he has hidden the loot from their last robbery somewhere on his property and are determined to claim it. Slim is attracted to June and decides to break up her engagement to Steve. To that end, he tells Merrill that unless he wants his criminal past exposed to his daughter, he must fire Steve immediately. Merrill gives in and although Steve agrees to stay away from June, he is suspicious of the new arrivals and begins to investigate them with the help of his clever horse, Black King. A few days later, the jailbreak goes off as planned, but before the escapees arrive, Slim decides to take the money for himself. In the process, he shoots and kills Merrill with Steve's gun just as Steve is riding up to the ranch to elope with June. Slim flees, taking June with him, and Steve is pursued by a posse of ranch hands. While the cowboys are searching for Steve, the rest of the gang shows up to claim their money. After learning of the gang's involvement, the cowboys pursue Slim to the edge of a mountain. There Black King and Steve rescue June and lead the posse to the gang, which is then routed and arrested.
