When Ann, a confirmed New Yorker, reluctantly accompanies her sickly brother on a convalescent trip to the West, she meets ranch foreman Rob Raymond. Even though her father had nicknamed her "Hesper of the Mountains," Ann feels so out of place in the West that she treats Rob coldly when he tries to romance her. Even after Rob singlehandedly prevents a potentially violent encounter between striking miners and a sheriff's posse, Ann remains unimpressed and soon returns to New York. She begins to yearn, however, not only for the rougher, rustic lifestyle she had once hated, but also for Rob. Finally, she contacts him, and he instantly agrees to her plan of coming to get her and bringing her back to the West.
