When her landlady threatens to evict Jill McAllister and her mother for non-payment of rent, Jill takes a job at International Film Studios doubling for snooty star Laura Gerard. When Laura is badly hurt in an automobile accident, studio head Solomon "Solly" Ginsburg implores Jill to secretly impersonate Laura for $1,000. Director Charles Hemingway, whose name has been changed by Ginsburg from Hemingham, promises to coach her, and leading man Wallace Morley, whom Jill is beginning to like, offers to help. Meanwhile, Jill's mother, unknown to Jill, has been put out of their apartment and has acquired a cleaning job at the studio. Laura dies and Jill goes through a frantic week of rehearsals, culminating in her successful debut impersonating Laura. Jill and Wally plan to marry, which disturbs Sally Lee, whose father controls forty high-class theaters in the South. Jealous of Wally's feelings for Jill, Sally tells DeSylva, a down-and-out actor, about the marriage plans. When DeSylva reveals that he secretly married Laura, Jill and Wally fly to Yuma to marry. After a friend of Sally's sees the couple register at a hotel in Lake Arrowhead on their honeymoon, Sally and DeSylva, now intoxicated and disheartened, drive up to the lake. While Sally has lunch with Wally, three men come to the cabin with a warrant for "Laura's" arrest for bigamy. Back in the studio, when DeSylva is offered $25,000 to withdraw the charges, he refuses the money, but says that he will cooperate if Jill can prove that she is not Laura. Jill's mother, cleaning outside, overhears and rips Jill's dress to show them a scar on her back from an accident. DeSylva apologizes and wishes the couple luck, and Jill's mother reveals that she recognized her daughter earlier, but said nothing, not wanting to spoil her chances for success.
