World War I pilot Ted Warren arrives home from France, shocking friends and family, who received none of his letters and for a year have believed him dead. While Ted was at war, all the cattle were stolen from the Warren ranch, making Ted's father Bruce unable to meet the mortgage. The ranch was then foreclosed to a man named Kent, who made Bruce foreman, ostensibly out of charity. Kent has plans to marry Ted's girl friend, Mary Barns, who works in his store, but she still loves Ted. Ted buys back his horse and is en route to the ranch to greet his father, when two of Kent's men accost him. He bests them and goes to the ranch and embraces his father, promising him he will help rebuild the Warren herd. At Ted's request, his old friend, Grizzly, tells Mary that Ted is alive, and Ted is happy to find that she is still in love with him. After Kent sees them kissing, he returns to the ranch and spitefully confesses to Bruce that he rustled his cattle out of vengeance against his family. He shoots Bruce in the side and confesses that he is actually the last living member of the Selby family, whom the Warrens killed years before in a feud in Kentucky. Believing Bruce dead, Kent dumps his body in a pile of leaves. Ted reports his father missing to the sheriff, who is suspicious of Kent. Meanwhile, a stranger named Slippery Gerns approaches Kent to obtain more of the Warren cattle, but when Kent says the cattle are all gone, Slippery offers his services as an assassin, proving his credentials with a "wanted" poster. After learning that Kent runs the post office, Ted catches him removing a stack of his old letters from his store safe. Ted struggles with Kent, and when the sheriff hears shots, he enters to arrest Kent; however, because Ted is grateful to Kent for keeping his father on at the ranch, he cautiously declines to press charges. The sheriff and Ted then go to the ranch to search for Bruce. Bruce staggers back to the ranch and enters Grizzly's shack, where he warns Ted that Kent swore he would kill him. One of Kent's gang, meanwhile, tricks Mary into coming with him to a shack by giving her a phony note from Ted. As part of Bruce's plan to get Kent to incriminate himself, Ted loads Kent's gun with blanks while he sleeps; Bruce appears to Kent as a ghost, and when Kent shoots his gun and the bullets fail to penetrate Bruce, Kent is terrorized into repeating his confession within earshot of the sheriff. The sheriff then enters, and Kent escapes through a window to the shack. There, Mary refuses to elope with him. When Kent orders his henchman to stand guard over her while the gang robs the bank, Slippery offers to keep an eye on the guard. After Kent leaves, Slippery handcuffs the guard's wrist to his ankle and tells Mary he is Harrington, a G-man. Mrs. Barns then shows Kent's fake note to Ted, and Slippery and Mary meet Ted and the sheriff on their way to find her. While Grizzly takes Mary home, the other men join forces with the G-men and open fire on the gang as it rides out of town. Ted races to the shack and finds the handcuffed man. Kent, who has absconded with the money, returns to the shack, and Ted retrieves the money bags from Kent's saddle, then walks in on him. Telling Kent that shooting is too good for him, Ted, the last of the Warrens, fights the last of the Selbys until the sheriff and Slippery enter and arrest Kent. Later, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Warren reside happily at the revived Warren ranch, with Grizzly as their foreman.
