Nominated for nine 1991 Golden Horse Awards, Taiwan's equivalent of the Academy Award. The film won three, including Best Leading Actor (Sihung Lung), Best Supporting Actress (Lai Wang), and a Special Award from the Grand Jury for Ang Lee.

Feature directorial debut for Ang Lee who received his BFA in theater from the University of Illinois, and his MFA in film production from New York University. This is the first installment in Lee's loosely-linked "father knows best" trilogy, which also includes "The Wedding Banquet" (USA/Taiwan/1993) and "Eat Drink Man Woman" (USA/Taiwan/1994). All three films star Sihung Lung.
In 1990, Lee entered two scripts in the annual Taiwanese government screenplay contest, and won first and second prizes for "Pushing Hands" and "The Wedding Banquet," respectively.
