    Hollywood legend Joan Crawford won a golden statuette for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Mildred Pierce - the story of a woman who divorces her husband and starts her own business in an effort to support her new single life and her demanding daughter.

    Though Humprey Bogart was Oscar-nominated, neither he nor leading lady Ingrid Bergman was honoured at the 1944 Academy Awards. However, Casablanca did win three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay.

    A cast of acting heavyweights led by Marlon Brando brings the story of Julius Caesar to the screen in an Academy Award-winning classic adaptation of the notorius Roman dictator's life story. The film was nominated for six Oscars in total in 1954, including one for Brando in the lead role, but eventually only took one statuette for Best Art Direction.
